[edit] File Size Limitations
There are several AVI formats in use with different file size limitations:
- VFW AVI: The Video For Windows architecture limits the AVI file size to 2 GB
- OpenDML AVI: An extension of the AVI format that allows AVI of any size
- Segmented AVI: Breaks AVI file into 2 GB or 4 GB chunks, and allows AVI of any size
In addition to the AVI file limitations, the file system used by Windows will also put a limit on maximum file sizes. FAT16 limits file sizes to 2 GB on Windows 95/98/ME, and 4 GB on Windows NT/2000/XP. FAT32 limits the file sizes to 4 GB. NTFS allows practically unlimited file sizes.
