This topic discusses in detail the various options of the popular and free ImgBurn optical media burning program.

Many users ask "What is best?" and "Which settings should I alter?". This topic will show users what each of the many configurable items does.

Leave the settings on default; ImgBurn really does work best as it comes.

To restore the defaults, click on Restore Defaults in any settings tab. You will have the option to restore all defaults (click Yes) or just the default settings for that tab (click No).

If you feel that you must change your settings, here is a synopsis of them.

Options

Minimize to system tray: Does exactly what it says.

Sync. Build / Write / Discovery Opt:

Queue Window - Stay On Top: Keeps the queue window on top of other windows while it is open.

Prevent Screen Saver From Starting: For those who don't want any CPU to be wasted during a burn.

Show "Shutdown" Window: Will display your shutdown option after the action has completed.

You can also select the shutdown option. Either Log Off, Restart, Turn Off (default), Standby or Hibernate. Checking the box next to the shutdown action will never force it.

Allocate Files On Creation:

Calculate MD5 Hash Values: Calculates MD5 values for builds and images and displays them in the log.

Create MDS - Preserve Full Pathnames: Preserve the full path of the files when creating the MDS file which accompanies an ISO.

Parse File System Timeout: The allowed time to parse the file system during read and verify operations. Ranges from 10 seconds to 5 minutes (default is 30 seconds).

Layer Break

Check Don't Update IFO/BUP Files: Will automatically check this setting for dual layer DVD-Video burns.

It is used mainly if you have set or unset the non-seamless flag in a particular cell and want it kept that way.

Check Seamless: Will automatically check the seamless layer break option when building or burning a dual layer DVD Video.

Only use this if you are sure your player accepts seamless playback across the layer break (most modern players do).

ImgBurnPreview File Name

The preview is used to display conveniently what the video looks like at your selected layer break on dual layer builds. The default application is ImgBurnPreview.exe, which is located in your ImgBurn folder. If you wish to use an alternative DVD2AVI implementation, enter its EXE here.

Don't Limit Frames Per Second:

Don't Use Direct Draw Overlays: If you are having problems with the display, check this box.

These are all very intuitive.

Graph Data: Allows you the option to capture automatically graph data for display in DVDInfoPro.

Capture Processor Usage allows you to set the interval for the data to capture (ranges from 10ms to 1 second with the lower numbers equating to more data captured - default is 100ms).

The other graph options allow you to name the graph based on your drive's make and model and the time and date of the burn. As well, you can capture the graph data to a selectable folder (most recently used, the image's folder or a custom user folder).

Sounds: Allows you to turn on or off user specified WAV files for "success" and "error". Useful if you are working in another window while ImgBurn is working.

Discs produced by Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden are strongly recommended to avoid most burning issues.
Stay away from cheap media like CMC Magnetics, Ritek G05s, Princo, Memorex etc. The few pennies you save on this garbage will be quickly eaten up in frustration at bad burns or burns that turn to mush after a few months.
The brand name of the media is usually meaningless. The media ID code is the thing that matters (and even then that is sometimes faked). For a good idea of media quality, see the media quality page.
The only dual layer disks we recommend are Verbatim 2.4x +R (media ID = MKM-001s). Please do not tell us your disks are "fine". Don't be a cheapskate where media is concerned - get good quality media and your troubles will vanish.
Ensure your DMA is on for all devices on all IDE channels.
Ensure your firmware is up to date. See the firmware page. Don't be scared to update your firmware - it ensures that your drive has the most chance of recognising your media and successfully writing to it.
If you have a problem, post your complete log, together with a short description of the problem and a complete copy of any error messages in the ImgBurn Support Forum.

Failure to follow the above will result in Armageddon. Well, OK, not quite the end of time but you will end up with a useless disc.
Do not ever ask us about ripping DVDs, as we can not (and will not) provide any information about that. Google is your friend.
Please ensure when obtaining a copy of ImgBurn you only download from the official ImgBurn site or one of the listed mirrors on the official site. This will ensure you have the latest version and not a version some 3rd party has tinkered with. Failure to do this will definitely result in Armageddon that not even Lassie could save you from.
