An (audio/video) container format is a file format that allows various codecs to be used within the file. AVI, MKV and MP4 are popular container formats.

For example, one AVI file can use the DivX video codec and the MP3 audio codec, while another AVI file can use the XviD codec and the AAC audio codec. Therefore, when specifying the specifications of an AVI file or any other container format, one must also provide details of the codec used as well.
