Demultiplexing (also known as demux) in digital video refers to taking a video file and separating it into its basic components, usually an audio track, a video track and possibly subtitle tracks. It is the opposite of multiplexing.

For example, you can "demux" a VOB file to retrieve the raw MPEG-2 video stream, the AC3 stream and any sub-picture streams.
