LPCM has existed since the days of CDs, but now with [[HDMI]]'s higher bandwidth, it can now carry 5.1 or 7.1 channels of audio, as opposed to the 2 channel audio found on CDs. LPCM is uncompressed audio, so it requires a lot of storage space.
