XviD is an open-source video compression codec. XviD was developed partly in response to DivX codec, which used work produced by the open-source Project Mayo, but went towards a proprietary path which did not please some people who were involved in Project Mayo. XviD aims to offer a open-source alternative to DivX.

Performance and quality wise, XviD is an equal match to that of DivX.
