H.264, also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Codec), is a next-generation video codec that is designed for both low bandwidth (eg. mobile devies) and high bandwidth (eg. high definition video) usage.

H.264 is supported by both Blu-ray and HD DVD. It is also used in mobile devices such as the Apple iPod, Apple iPhone, Apple TV and the Sony PSP. The Xbox 360 and PS3 also support the playback of H.264 video.

H.264 offers better compression rates than MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 ASP, and the expense of needing a more processing power for decoding.
