Map of PAL/NTSC/SECAM usage around the world

PAL (Phase Alternating Line) is a video broadcasting standard used in most of Europe, Australia, China, India, the Middle East and large parts of South American and Africa.

In terms of digital video, PAL video files can be identified with having a framerate of 25 FPS.

In terms of gaming, PAL-50 and PAL-60 both exist, each with different refresh rates of 50 and 60 Hz. PAL is predominately 50 Hz, but due to video game development being heavily influenced by the NTSC countries, PAL-60 was developed to allow easy compatibility between PAL and NTSC games.
